Making the Team: The Scoring & Background Info.

We all love to predict who will make the cut for Worlds and the Olympics. It's part of being a gym a fan, and it's a fun way to pass the time between competitions. This past week I created a tracking and ranking system that will incorporate competition results and subjective scores based on difficulty, form, mental toughness, and likeability. The system will incorporate 3 competitions -- Covergirl and the two nights of the Visa Championships. The emphasis IS on the Visa Championships since not everyone competed at the Covergirl Classic. The top 5 individuals from each event at Covergirl will receive a bonus (based on their rankings) that will be added to their overall score from Nationals. I am hoping this system gives us a clue into which combination of girls would create the best Worlds team.

I chose to incorporate subjective scores, because that is actually part of what gymnastics is: a subjective sport. We all know that gymnasts with higher difficulty get a little cushioning from the judges due to their difficulty. It's also true that a girl who radiates on an event is likely to get a little boost, and someone who competes cleanly leaves a good impression in the minds of judges. The final subjective factor is more about getting into Marta's mind than judging. She wants a girl who will keep her cool. All subjective scores are based entirely on the specific competition.


THE SCORING
Each of the subjective factors are based on a score between 1 and 5, with 5 being the highest.

For difficulty, I came up with these guidelines:

All around difficultyIndividual Event difficulty

The girls who competed at Classic will receive a bonus for each event they place top 5 in. The bonus is based on their ranking on the event and will range from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest.

The rest of the scoring comes directly from the results.

So to sum it all up: a girl's total score will be results + subjective + Bonus. The girls will be ranked according to AA and each individual event.
